In-person sessions in Carine (Perth northern suburbs) and telehealth Australia-wide

Confidential, non-judgemental and reflective supervision for social workers — the reflective space you need to keep providing quality social work and counselling services, and to maintain your own well-being.

Supervision can assist social workers to meet the AASW Mental Health accreditation supervision hours required to maintain your accreditation.

External clinical supervision is available for both government and private practice social workers, including supervision for practitioners who are newer to mental health social work.

Sessions can be 1:1, or colleagues can consider group supervision sessions together to reduce costs. Supervision is usually monthly, however it can be at whatever frequency works for you, your work schedule and your needs.

Supervision sessions involve case discussions, reflections using the Gibbs Reflective Cycle or Mentalisation Based Practice models, and consideration of risk and ethical issues.

Sessions can be online or face to face in Perth. Online can often be easier to schedule from your workplace.

Kate's complete work history is listed on her AASW Find a Social Worker profile, if you would like more detail about her background before making contact.

Parents and their teenagers talking together at home

Parenting teenagers workshops in Perth

A six-week evidence-based program for small groups of six to eight parents or parenting pairs. The course supports parents to build a better connection with their teens, to reduce parent-teen tension or conflict, to support their young person to transition into young adulthood successfully, and to increase parent confidence in the face of intense teenage emotions. This is a safe and non-judgemental space, where parents have a chance to learn alongside one another and to connect with other parents who are working through the same things.

The course runs over six consecutive weeks in school term (times and hours vary), and there is also the chance to join monthly support sessions after the course has concluded. This evening monthly group, based in term time, allows participants to join with other parents, to continue to implement course material, and to focus on topics of particular interest to the group with Kate.

At present these courses are run in person, as Kate believes this fosters greater connection amongst parents, however an online group may be available at times. Parents can also request to do the course privately.

  • Short-term or ongoing
  • Online or face to face in Perth

Kate has experience in family therapy, having completed a one-year post-graduate degree in Family and Marital Therapy at the William Street Family Therapy Centre in Perth, Western Australia. Kate has also completed additional training in evidence-based parenting courses.

About Kate O'Donovan

Kate as a Mental Health Social Worker

Kate is a Mental Health Social Worker and Therapist with more than 20 years of experience working in government mental health services in Perth, New Zealand and Canada. She has worked in government child and adolescent mental health services in Western Australia for nearly a decade, with children and young people with complex mental health issues and acute presentations who struggle to regulate their emotions and behaviour.

Kate has also worked in non-government organisations supporting young people with mental health issues, in first episode psychosis services, and in government organisations with adults with mental health issues. She has also worked for 10 years in Western Australian government health services for people who have recently been sexually assaulted, or who experienced sexual abuse in the past.

Since 2013, Kate has provided a therapeutic space in private practice for clients with a range of clinical issues including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, childhood sexual abuse and sexual assault, birth trauma, grief and loss, gender and sexuality, and transitioning to different life stages from parenting to retirement.

Whilst Kate is passionate about early intervention and adolescent mental health, she also has a special interest in couples work and in women who have experienced birth trauma. She also enjoys supporting parents, whether that be through the newborn years, young children, or navigating the adolescent period.

Kate is an Accredited EMDR Practitioner (certified by the EMDR Association of Australia, EMDRAA), however she offers many different counselling approaches to clients depending on their needs. These include Schema Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, EMDR for couples and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.

Kate believes that everyone needs a little support sometimes, particularly when we are going through life's transitions, when we face the unexpected, or when we feel like life's stressors are getting on top of us. Kate looks forward to offering you a safe and confidential space, whatever your difficulties may be.

Professional background and supervision

Kate has completed a Bachelor of Social Work (with Honours) and a Masters in Human Service Counselling (through the Curtin School of Social Work), which included units in family therapy, mindfulness, art therapy, and counselling theory and practice.
